About Community Organizations United for Marriage

We are a broad-based group of community organizations who believe that all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage.

We believe marriage and family are about love and commitment, working together, bettering the community, raising children, and growing old together. We believe in an Oregon that supports strong families and values freedom and equality. And we believe that marriage matters. To all Oregonians.

We know many people in loving and committed same-sex relationships who are active participants in improving our state and our communities, and we’ve seen how important marriage has been for them and their families.

Ultimately, this is not a political issue. This is an issue of basic fairness. No one should be told it’s illegal to marry the person they love. Treating others as one would want to be treated includes allowing marriage for same-sex couples who are truly committed to each other.

We are united in our belief that allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples strengthens families and strengthens the state we love. And, we are united in our hope that the people of Oregon will join us in supporting the freedom to marry for all of Oregon’s loving, committed same-sex couples.

Why community organizations support the freedom to marry

Basic freedom.

The freedom to marry is about a basic freedom that should not be denied to anyone. None of us would want to be told that it is illegal to marry the person we love. Treating others as one would want to be treated includes allowing marriage for same-sex couples who are truly committed to each other.

Oregon's shared values.

Allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples strengthens families and strengthens the state we love. In Oregon, there are certain truths we hold dear. We believe in basic freedom. In tolerance. In treating others as we would want to be treated ourselves. We should listen to our hearts, and the values we all share—and vote yes to the freedom to marry.

AFSCME Council 75 represents 24,000 working people in Oregon. Our members work for state agencies, local governments, childcare and in private non-profits and they are all in the public service. We have members in every county in Oregon and eight offices around the state and our political action committee has equal representation from every congressional district. Collectively our members have come together and voted to support the rights of all citizens to be married. We believe that all Oregon workers deserve the same rights and protections. Oregon Education Association

As a union of educators, the Oregon Education Association (OEA) works to build communities where people can live and prosper equally. We understand that our students thrive when their families supported and valued. When our communities respect every person, students feel safe in their classrooms and can focus on learning, and educators are free to do the job they love — educate. Supporting marriage equality can have significant impacts on the success of Oregon’s students and public schools. Read more.
